‘steamtech’
The ‘Fuel-less’ Steam Locomotive.
Designed by the Dwarf Engineer, Ulfgard Kettle-Master, this Revolutionary Device allows Steam Engines to operate without carrying their own firebox or coal supply. Kettle-Master was working on improving the system of Underground Trains at the Dwarfhold of Wassenburg. One of the complaints from the passengers was that the smoke and steam from the locomotive engine created an Unpleasant Miasma of Gases within the confines of the underground tunnel.
Ulfgard looked at the problem and came up with an Advanced Solution. He had been experimenting high-pressure steam boilers to increase the power of locomotives. It occurred to him that an insulated high-pressure boiler could be used to hold Steam Alone. A ‘Reservoir Sphere’ full of pre-heated steam can be ‘plugged in’ to an engine and provide a steady supply of power for several hours of continuous operation. This means that the new, underground trains built for the Dwarfhold carry passengers in comfort through Smoke-free Tubes. Furthermore, stationary steam engines can be used to prepare pre-filled spheres which can be swapped for the empty one on board a train in a few minutes. The empty sphere can then be refilled for its next use.
Already, the Authorities of both Paris and London have expressed Great Interest in this Unique Invention. Currently, this technology is very expensive but over the next few years, we expect that its price will drop and the size of ‘Reservoir Spheres’ will reduce. In the near future it may well be possible to run a steam-powered device, which is the size of a traveller’s trunk, for a few hours using a sphere the size of a cricket- or base-ball!
